Area-Selective Adhesive Solutions for Control Panels and Graphic Overlays

Metal control panels as well as polycarbonate or polyester graphic overlays typically attach to the mating equipment with pressure sensitive adhesive. It can be misunderstood that the adhesive is a layer over the entire back of the panel or overlay. One of the benefits of customizing these products is that there are allowances that can be made for cut-outs, and area-selective space where adhesive is not found.

Metal panels, overlays, and trim can be found on equipment and machines across all industries and products in both indoor and outdoor applications. They are the interface between operator and equipment, often showcasing product branding along with communicating critical information and safety instructions. Examples of products that use decorative overlays include home appliances, commercial food service equipment, electronic equipment, and audio/visual devices. These products often have underlying circuits or there may be control knobs and buttons which need to be clear of any residue or exposure to sticky adhesives.

Benefits of Selectively Applied Adhesives

Pressure sensitive adhesive can be applied selectively - in other words, you dictate specific areas that need to be kept clear from having adhesive. Some benefits of selective adhesive include:

  • Easy to read graphics through LED windows

  • Push buttons that do not stick to the mating surface

  • No adhesive residue or overflow in cut out areas

Recommendation for the appropriate adhesive is made based on the substrate the nameplate is applied to, taking into consideration any environmental exposure and the specific guidelines the bond needs to meet, including feasibility for selective areas. Discussion early in the project development is ideal.

How Can We Help?

Applications using adhesive are diverse. Metal control panels and graphic overlays are no exception. Concerned about calling out adhesive-free areas? We work closely with adhesive manufacturers to provide you the best solution. Common specifications call for the 3M brand, but equivalent alternatives can be identified as well.
