RoHS 3 and REACH Compliance Matters for Product Identification

One point of discussion for product identification centers on compliance requirements for materials. It is important for OEMs to ensure that their product and supply chain meet the acceptable limits for certain types of chemicals and materials. This article explains RoHS and REACH, two of the most common compliance requests that cross our desks for nameplates and labels.

What is RoHS 3 and REACH?

REACH and ROHS compliant manufacturing processesRoHS stands for “Restriction of Hazardous Substance” This legislation restricts the use of ten hazardous materials impacting the electronics industry across the globe along with many components. Examples of these types of products include large or small household appliances, telecommunications equipment, lighting equipment, toys, sports equipment and automatic dispensers.

REACH is short for “Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals”. This relates to chemicals used to create consumer products, including materials, solvents and paints. It provides regulation of potentially toxic substances from being exposed to humans and the environment.

As a responsible OEM, you want to ensure that your suppliers are within acceptable limits of these directives. It is common and expected that you will request compliance confirmation.
