6 Tips to Simplify Graphic Overlay Design

Graphic overlays are functional components that act as interface for touchscreens or stand alone product branding for electronic devices, appliances, and medical equipment. An overlay is often the first thing a user notices about a product.

Laying out the information to be displayed on an overlay does not need to be complicated. Keep it simple with these 6 design tips.

1. Order information logically, only listing what is necessary. Clearly display information so it is large enough to read and arranged in order of importance to the user.  A good general guide is to move from general to specific.

2. Present information in a simple, clean layout. Take into consideration the type of information that needs to be shown. Graphics need to be easily visible against the background.

3. Use font size to signify level of importance. Font size depends on the context for overlay and how much data is displayed. The minimum recommendation is 12 pt font. When in doubt, make it bigger.

4. Place clear labels for each piece of information. Consider the use of icons and symbols that are intuitive for the type of product and user interaction. When in doubt, don't assume it is understood.

5. Take care with typography. Use typefaces with standard shapes, uniform stroke width, and limit embellishments. Letters need to be easily identified and contrast with the background for best readability.

6. Stick to a basic color palette. Keep it simple with standard colors. Too many colors complicates the information. An overlay that is too complicated or hard to read makes it difficult to understand.

Durable Material Options for Graphic Overlays

A variety of plastic material options is stocked that provide the right protection along with the functionality, durability, and custom decoration. Polyester and polycarbonate are the most common choices for graphic overlays.

  • Polyester (Mylar) - thin, flexible material that typically is coupled with an overlaminate for robust resistance to chemicals and harsh elements.

  • Polycarbonate (Lexan) - available in thicknesses up to .030", offering a durable solution that resist abrasions and stand up to exposure to cleaning solutions, chemicals, or other harsh environments.
