3 Ways to Hide a Raw Edge of Metal Nameplates

Written by Vicky Bowie | Apr 30, 2019

When metal nameplates are cut, the edges are raw aluminum. For many types of products this is not an issue. Sometimes it is not ideal to have that silver edge show. An example is when the mating surface is dark color and the nameplate is decorated with dark color as well. When this happens, it does not mean that you have to look for another solution for branding. Instead, here are three options that either hide or work the raw edge into the design of nameplates and badges.

Place a Nameplate into a Recessed Area

When the mating surface for a nameplate is designed with a recess, there is a depression created that allows the nameplate to set in. This hides the raw edge of the metal and becomes a method of standard location for the branding. It is more difficult to remove a nameplate from a recessed area because the edge is not exposed. The gap between the nameplate and bottom of the recess can be filled in with foam adhesive or a molded back plate.

Form Over the Nameplate Edges

Another option to protecting the edge of metal nameplates is to form over those edges. This does not need to be a deep draw. By wiping over the edge, the raw metal is less exposed to the elements and the decorated part meets the mating surface, creating a finished look. In some cases this is used as an alternative to a heavy cast badge.

Disguise the Raw Edge with a Border

Rather than trying to eliminate the silver edge for a metal nameplate, designing it so that there is a silver border will help to disguise it. Instead of being a distraction, the silver becomes part of the intent and look of the part. This is a great way to incorporate the natural essence of the metal into the nameplate, accentuating the rest of the decoration with some flair and elegance.
