Customization Options for Graphic Overlays

A graphic overlay can satisfy both function and aesthetic needs for equipment that has regular user interaction. Typically made from polycarbonate or polyester material, an overlay acts as the interface for touchscreens or stand alone product branding for electronic devices, appliances, and medical equipment. An overlay is often the first thing a user notices about a product.

There are several ways to customize a graphic overlay. The most common are detailed in the table below.

Benefit

Selective Texture
Create contrast, add interest, or designate areas for buttons and control features
Die Cut Holes
Cutout areas allow for plugs, connectors, pins, knobs, and buttons
LED and Transparent Windows
Clear and transparent color windows allow LED lights or display information to show through the overlay
Dead Front Graphics
Hidden graphics show alerts and special icons only when lit
Backlit Graphics
Transparent colors for indicators, speedometer numbers, and other lit graphics
Embossed Buttons or Borders
Raised areas that clearly designate control buttons, keypads, or border elements
Hardcoat and Overlaminate Protection
Added protection against abrasions, scratches, and exposure to chemicals
Anti-glare, Matte, Velvet, Brushed, or Glossy Finishes
Special finishing options that enhance the look of the overlay
Selective Adhesive
Areas with no adhesive, such as buttons, windows, dead front or backlit graphics

From die cut holes that allow for fit around plugs and connectors to special finishing to achieve a brushed metal look on plastic, the options to create an impressive overlay are wide open.
